Prepare for a Wonderful Holiday with these Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winter weather can result in hazardous and unpredictable road conditions. While staying off the road in extreme weather is always recommended, safe driving methods must be used when driving is unavoidable. Prepare for a healthy holiday season by making the necessary driving changes and following these winter driving safety tips.

If there is snow or ice on the road, reduce your speed. Speed limits are generally based on normal weather and road conditions, not winter road conditions. When driving, maintain at least three times the normal following distance in case of accidental skids. Keep an eye out for snow plows and other equipment and stay a minimum of 200 feet away. Be cautious when driving on overpasses, bridges, and ramps, as these areas often accumulate ice first. If you begin to slide, steer in the direction of the skid until you have straightened your vehicle and regained traction.
