Understanding the Home Renovation Process

Home renovations can take many forms, with varying degrees of cost and complexity. To save time, money and aggravation, understand the process, considerations and steps involved. Here is a simple checklist of considerations that can help you have a successful renovation.

Home Renovation Considerations

  • Understand the scope of the project before you start. Take off the blinders and take time to understand the realities of your renovation.
  • Get your clipboard and list all changes you want. Make a wish list of all the things you’d like to change.
  • Decide what you and your contractor will do. Be honest. Only take on tasks you can do; let your contractor do the rest (the hard stuff).
  • Create a reasonable working budget for the renovation. The key word is “reasonable.” This is no time to be “wishing and hoping.” Be realistic and over-budget if you must, but never under-budget.
  • Consider where you’ll live during the renovation. Can you stay at home or do you need lodging during the project?
  • Make a project plan. Plan your approach and individual steps to complete your project. Be ready to modify your plan as needed.
  • Do a bit at a time for long projects or do major renovations all together. Either do just a little, such as painting one room at a time, or all of it at once, such as renovating kitchens and bathrooms.
